Recipient of a Kaiser Media Fellowship in Health

These prestigious fellowships are awarded annually to six medical journalists in a national competition.

Shared in The Miami Herald‘s staff Pulitzer Prize for Public Service Journalism

Served as the health/medical reporter on the Miami Herald news team that won the Pulitzer Prize for coverage that, the jury said, “helped readers cope with Hurricane Andrew’s devastation.”

Sigma-Tau Foundation Award

Honored for reporting on Alzheimer’s disease by the Sigma-Tau Foundation, the charitable wing of an Italian pharmaceutical company.

Penney-Missouri Award
The Miami Herald’s Living section won the Penney-Missouri Award as the best features section in the nation, based on a sampling of five issues that featured her byline on three out of the five lead stories.

Medical Writing Awards (various)
From societies including the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association and Arthritis Foundation, for writing about consumer medical issues.

C.B. Blethen Memorial Award
Pacific NW newspaper award for distinguished enterprise reporting, for stories on the ongoing environmental issues caused by radioactive wastes from ~40 years of nuclear fuel reprocessing at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Senior editor, Refractive Eyecare
Wrote articles and developed a major scientific publishing project for this trade magazine, which covers ophthalmic surgery and is written for physicians.

Freelance Medical/Science Writer;  President, Fine Lines Communications, Inc.
Incorporated to accommodate the needs of a corporate clientele seeking writing and editing services for internal and external communications. Commercial and scientific writing for medical clients including major ophthalmic drug and device manufacturers.

Other clients have included EyeNet, the news magazine of the American Academy of Ophthalmology; Refractive Eyecare online newsletter for AAO  and the International Society of Refractive Surgery; Waggener-Edstrom Public Relations (for Microsoft PressPass); Mojo Productions (DVD instructional script for a Hewlett-Packard project); OnHealth.com; Consumer Reports magazine; HealthWatch, published by the Massachusetts Medical Society; and (in Portland) Oregon Health Forum, the Oregon Nurses Association, and the National Eczema Association for Science and Education.

Kaiser Media Fellowship in Health
A sabbatical year of study, travel and reporting on the topic of cultural barriers to medical care, with an emphasis on how the issue is manifested among immigrant populations in the U.S. Sunbelt.

Health/Medical Reporter for the Miami Herald
Projects included spearheading and writing a special section that, for the first time in any American newspaper, told readers frankly how to protect themselves from AIDS.

Science, medical and personal health reporter at The Los Angeles Times
Developed and wrote articles on issues ranging from biotechnology and gene therapy to endangered-species breeding and El Niño. Acquired expertise on health-care contracting and managed care. Won several national medical-writing awards.

Science editor and writer for The Oregonian
Led a close-knit specialty team of reporters, photographers and graphic artists in producing a weekly color section. Reported on a wide variety of “hard science” topics, from high-energy physics to astronomy and geophysics.

During this time, served as assigning and supervising editor on The Oregonian’s award-winning series, The Hanford Gamble. Also co-reported and wrote a special series that calculated, for the first time, how much radiation exposure Northwest residents received in the 1940s and ‘50s from Hanford. (These calculations were later confirmed in a multimillion-dollar federal study.)

Assistant city editor and deputy metropolitan editor, The Oregonian
Directed a newsroom of 100 reporters and editors. Scheduled staff, launched assignments, organized and motivated teams on special projects. Coordinated with other departments, and devised strategies for better covering the region. Previous to this, served as the newspaper’s suburban editor.

Copy editor, The Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) and the Austin (TX) American-Statesman
In addition to line copy editing, the positions included working with printers and layout, and supervising other copy editors in “the slot.”

Dow Jones Newspaper Fund editing intern
Intensive training and summer internship program offering invaluable experience in the theory and practice of copy editing.
